Preferred Bio (300 words)

Alicia Champlin is an American artistic researcher, certified Deep Listening® facilitator, and creative development specialist based in Barcelona, whose work explores creativity as an embodied, relational process. Working across sound art, participatory performance, improvisation, and experimental media, she creates experiences that invite new ways of perceiving, listening, collaborating, and making sense of complex systems. She is an active member of TOPLAP Barcelona, aka @alice_ahora in the livecoding community.

Her practice is grounded in artistic research and informed by systems thinking, cognitive science, and more than a decade of embodied listening practice. Rather than treating creativity as the production of ideas or objects, Ali approaches it as a way of relating—to ourselves, to one another, and to the environments we inhabit. This perspective informs an evolving body of research that integrates artistic practice, facilitation, education, and the development of original frameworks for creative and relational learning. Short Bio 2

Alicia Champlin is an American intermedial artist, composer, and certified Deep Listening® facilitator from Maine (USA), based in Barcelona since 2017. Her primary questions are about how generative systems and sound can be tools to pick at the phenomenological aspects of our systems-based paradigm, where co-experience & meaning are emergent phenomena. Her creative efforts take many forms – live-coding, sound baths, instrument building, biofeedback/biohacking, sound installation, durational performance etc, as well as finding interesting ways these practices can intersect.

Champlin received her MFA from the University of Maine and has performed or exhibited with Sònar Festival, Cabaret Voltaire, Galeria Zé dos Bois, VIU Festival, BEK, IEM, and ICLC. More info at https://alicia-champlin.cv.

HeadSpace program note

In this project, HeadSpace , the performer’s live EEG data is used as a control signal, focused on the naturally occurring octaves (frequency doubling) within the EEGsignal spectrum. As a means of sonifying the brainwave signals, they will be mapped into a sequence of audible frequencies through live coded sound synthesis, and stepped through a modulating harmonic series derived from Schumann resonance frequencies. The two domains (EEG and the Schumann resonance) essentially overlap in the electromagnetic spectrum, posing an interesting synchronicity and thought experiment.

Through this pairing, manipulated by live-coding 40 individual synthesizers and programmatically mixing the signals in real time, the work brings 2 omnipresent but hidden phenomena together in a soundscape narrative of biofeedback in play with atmospheric feedback.
